BAHNHOFSSTRASSE AND town hall district
URBAN PLANNING COMPETITION IN LEHRTE 2023
As part of the mobility transition, transport hubs are being developed into mobility hubs. Bahnhofstrasse is being redesigned as a clearly structured traffic axis that creates a safe and open transition between local public transport and individual mobility (bike or car). There are various stores, including cafés, bike stores and a bakery on the first floor, while studios and spaces for start-ups are available on the upper floor to actively revitalize the area around the station and prevent it from falling into disrepair. A parking garage on the site can accommodate the new signal box, but space can also be offered for various services. The design of the buildings is based on the typologies of rail traffic, with slender, long buildings creating a clear connection to the track area and an avenue of high-quality surfacing offering a high quality of stay. The shared space concept ensures safety and quality on the street. The access hall is open and inviting, easily connected to bicycle and car parking spaces as well as sharing providers and public transport. The architecture of the viaducts uses recycled concrete from demolition material and timber panel construction for the superstructures. An open space will be created for the town hall extension area that marks the center of the town and integrates all transitions. The existing building remains untouched, but is placed at the center of a generous open space design. The residential building is directly adjacent and forms a residential courtyard for administration and citizens. A city park on the track side contributes to the quality of stay and the urban climate.
