REFUGIUM
STUDY REFUGIUM IN ESSEX 2016
Embedded in a landscape of fields, courtyards and pastures, a single-storey building base rises up on the eastern edge of the plot, complemented by two gabled roof structures on top. This careful arrangement loosens up the scale of the building and creates a harmonious connection between the living areas and a series of courtyards. These create views of the surrounding nature. After entering the courtyard through the Porte Cochere, the building opens up through the plinth element, which forms the supporting base for all areas and functions of the ensemble. The landscape is integrated into the structure of the building through a balanced sequence of rooms and volumes, which are designed in seemingly simple forms, as well as through targeted recesses and incisions.
Handmade bricks in a deep earth tone envelop both the exterior walls and the pitched roof, echoing the natural color palette of the surroundings. The result is a harmonious symbiosis of architecture and nature that reflects the contemporary, rural lifestyle in a modern form.
