STUDY IN CHONGQUING 2014
As part of the refurbishment of the physics building at the Technical University of Munich‘s Garching campus, a comprehensive study was carried out to assess the structural, infrastructural and fire safety condition. The aim of this investigation was to find the most economical way to further develop the building, which was constructed at the end of the 1960s, to meet future requirements. Two relief buildings were designed to fulfil the requirements. The first building compensates for the lack of space and primarily provides laboratory and office space for biophysics. The second building concentrates on teaching and special rooms, including large lecture theatres and laboratories with special room height requirements. The arrangement of the volumetry creates a new courtyard situation that skilfully improves both functional and spatial continuity. In addition to a new building envelope for improved thermal insulation, the physics building will be retained as a historical element of the Garching campus. Thanks to the harmonious interplay of design architecture and functional science, the original building can be preserved and further developed.
