CASTLE MUSEUM
REFURBISHMENT CASTLE IN GRÜWALD 2013
As part of the renovation measures at the Grünwald Castle Museum, a branch museum of the State Archaeological Collection, a comprehensive structural and content-related modernisation was carried out. The work focussed on gutting the former Wittelsbach hunting lodge and restoring it to its historical state in order to create new exhibition spaces and rooms for museum education and events. The redesign of the permanent exhibition „Castles in Bavaria“ focuses on the history of Grünwald Castle. The historical value of the castle complex unfolds in the harmonious interplay of massive masonry structures and filigree wooden constructions. The powerful walls reveal their strength in every transition and every niche, while the open timber construction reflects the technical skills of the time and embodies an aesthetic based on them. This interplay of materiality and form characterises the unmistakable spatial design of Grünwald Castle, which is to be uncovered and continued through the renovation measures.
