COMPETITION SPORTS- AND LEISURE POOL IN FREISING 2008

The design of the new sports and leisure pool in Freising combines openness and retreat in a carefully thought-out spatial arrangement. The compact building structure creates clear visual links between the bathing areas and defines the spacious sunbathing and play area as a green link between the old and new outdoor pool. Carefully positioned openings create exciting views of the surrounding park landscape and the cathedral towers of Freising. At the same time, they shield the neighboring residential areas from the noise of the outdoor pools. Inside, the pool is divided into different functional areas that enable a variety of social and spatial experiences. The leisure pool is directly adjacent to the foyer and corresponds with the outdoor pools of the outdoor pool, creating a flowing connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The adjoining sports pool is located in a quieter part of the site and is given a special scenic quality by the reintroduction of the stream. The outdoor areas of the sauna baths were designed as hanging gardens above the parking garage. They have a beneficial relationship with the various treatments and form a green oasis of peace and relaxation. In keeping with the spa tradition, the body is wrapped in a filigree wooden façade structure. The undulating arrangement of the upper wooden panels reflects the movement of the water and gives the building a dynamic, almost ephemeral appearance.
