JAHNPLATZ

COMPETITION JAHNPLATZ IN MUNICH 2012

The design creates a clear and legible new center for Gräfelfing. The heterogeneous architectural and spatial structure of the site calls for a central location to focus publicity and attention. The clear figure creates an identity both internally and externally. The square stretches out towards the surrounding buildings and is flush with new and existing first floors. The S-Bahn station is made accessible without steps or barriers. The only traffic caesura at the edge of the square is the main road emerging from the railroad underpass. The edges are clearly defined. Large trees scattered loosely across the square, lively small stone paving and illuminated wooden benches create atmosphere and intimacy. The multicolored paving mixes with the building facades to create an overall spatial unity. A clear, calm urban structure forms a rectangular square in the center, on which the new town center is presented and developed.
Three buildings complement the existing structure: firstly, the two-storey artists‘ studios located on the railroad embankment, which also enliven the center culturally with workshops and presentation rooms. On the other, the striking head building with space for housing, restaurants and small businesses as well as the building associated with the S-Bahn with bicycle parking, underground access, toilets and a kiosk. The façades of the buildings correlate and complement each other, creating an overall spatial arc across the square. Warm reddish-grey tones in the façade mix with slightly greenish glass elements to create irregular rhythms and form a new urban center within the small-town, adjacent structures.
